Monday 11/05/2012. This was our first offshore trip since the passing of Sandy and the winds and cold front that followed. The water temps dropped and the fish started biting. The morning was slow. We hadn’t picked up a fish in 3 hours. We were trolling a combination of naked ballyhoo and artificials. The right rigger pops with a naked ballyhoo and the line starts screaming off the reel. We had seen the fish move into the lure spread and pick the ballyhoo. I knew this was a big fish by the way the line was coming off at strike drag. After about a 10 minute fight we got a first glimpse of the fish. I thought it was a small yellowfin because of the size and was suprised to find it was a blackfin once aboard. 38# monster! The biggest I had ever seen and probably will ever see. Picked up a few sailfish bites. A sail hit another ballyhoo which he cut in half. I dropped it back in freespool and he picked it up. We hooked him but he threw the hook. After a couple more sailfish hits and a false albacore aboard we decided to ride off into the sunset back to the dock with our prize blackfin packed in ice.

This was an exceptional day in every way. The seas were dead calm. The sun was shining all day, we had a great bunch of guys on board and a lot of fish went into the fish box. We picked up some live sardines and went looking for temperature breaks and current rips. In the dead calm sea they were easy to spot. We would drift the rip or temp break and live line sardines on light spinning tackle with 10lb test. Light tackle + dolphin = a good time! 13 keeper dolphin up to 10 pounds went on ice. A few of the usual by-catch including barracuda, small sharks, and false albacore. One of my customer was eyeing one of my OTI/Stella butterfly jigging combos onboard and asked if it would be OK if he tried it out. I said have at it! He dropped it down in 160′ of water and worked the jig like a pro. Then wham! A big amberjack nails the jig on the drop. 15 minutes later a 40 lb Amberjack goes in ice box. Everyone had a fantastic time.

He hit our long starboard outrigger line. Line started peeling off the reel pretty quickly. He was probably in the 35-40lb range. We also got several dolphins up to 15 lbs. Just one wahoo aboard makes the entire day worth while. We will be doing the wahoo trips until the big bull dolphin arrive. I’m still expecting the dolphin migrating north to be here sometime in the next week or two. The wind looks like it’s going to keep blowing this upcoming week and keep us tied to the dock!

Monday April, 2 was another slow day offshore. We did manage to get another wahoo aboard. This one wasn’t as big as the one we caught Friday but even the smaller ones put up a great fight. Small dolphin to 10 lbs were caught on weed lines and rips. I’m expecting the dolphin action to pick up as we head into the middle of April. The dolphin bite has been strong in the Palm Beach area and they are migrating North. Any day now! Hopefully the wahoo action will continue to hold up. There’s nothing like seeing those tiger stripes as you get a first look at the fish as he comes up.

It was a beautiful day out on the water on Friday 03/30/12. Seas were calm and air temps in the mid 70′s. I put our lines in the water just east of Bethel Shoal in about 120′ and headed east out to 350′. We had 2 knockdowns by dolphin which we were unable to hook. A third knockdown in 240′ feet was a blackfin tuna crashing our shotgun tuna feather. He came out of the water and crashed the lure on his way back down. We had him hooked for about 30 seconds but we lost him. We stayed out in 250-350′ of water for 2 hours.

There was nothing out there. The radio was alive with everyone asking where the fish were. No one was getting anything out that far. Peanut dolphin were being caught on a weed line in about 150′ so we decided to head there because it was better than nothing.

We got to 150′ and dropped our lines in and hooked a really nice wahoo. It was a tough day of fishing but we put a wahoo in the box and a released a school sized dolphin. Just goes to show you perseverance pays off.

We had an offshore charter on 03/03/12. The customers were looking for sailfish. We left dock @ 7AM and hit Bethel for some bait, got one blue runner after about 15min but decided to leave after seeing nothing of particular interest on the sonar around the buoy. We headed east with a six rod spread pulling 4 skirted ballyhoo on wire and 2 deep diving Magnum 30 plugs off the stern. We had a sailfish batting @ the shotgun ballyhoo in about 90′. We tried dropping it back but he wouldn’t eat it. We also spotted some tailing sailfish throughout the day but no bites. We wicked up 2 school sized dolphin around 10lbs. Both fish hit the Magnum 30 plugs. Sight fishing for cobia was difficult as the seas were about 3ft. We didn’t see any sign of manta rays. We spotted some weed lines and looked for triple tails and other life but nothing. February is often a tough month to catch fish. It looks like the latest cold front moving through with strong winds will keep us from fishing for at least the next week or so.

We were headed over to the east side for some yellowfin tuna today. Forecast was for seas about 2′. Got to the Sebastian Inlet this morning to find 4′ standing waves. Outside the inlet seas were a short and steep 3-4′ with severe thunderstorms over the gulf stream. We decided to make the best out of the situation and stay on this side of the gulf stream and troll ballyhoo for dolphin.

We picked up our first two dolphin in 130′ of water headed east. With two nice keeper dolphin aboard we headed out to 250ft of water only to be disappointed with the result. Decided to head back into 150′ and found the bite again and landed another 5 keeper dolphin between 160′ and 90′. Went back in around 2PM and called it a day with 6 dolphin aboard up to 28lbs and 1 released. Check out our gallery for the pics. Dolphin are definitely a solid bet out of Sebastian Inlet. Don’t miss it. Get your fish on!

This spring doesn’t feel much like spring time here in central Florida. It seems we went from high temps in the 60′s and low 70′s to daytime highs in the mid to high 80′s. Not much of a gradual lead in to summer time.

The water temps just outside the inlet are already 73 degrees. The cobias came through pretty strong this year begining the middle of March. There are sporadic reports still comming in most recently right off the beach outside Sebastian Inlet. Kingfish came through like a hurricane moving north and the king fishing was hot for about 10 days.

For the most part the weather has not been very conducive lately for going offshore. The offshore catch has also been sporadic. Dolphin are being caught here and there. No steady bite. One trip this month we found bluefish 30 miles offshore in 320′ of water! Many boats have been returning from trips with little to report.

The cold fronts should start diminishing in strength and frequency as we head into May. Bait should become more plentiful now that the large kingfish schools have moved out of the area. Bait was absent on most offshore locations once the kingfish came through.

Hopefully we will find some good weather soon to get offshore to the east side of the gulf stream as yellowfin have already shown up. We’ll keep you posted.
